Coppice of Linwood

Distance

3 MILES (5KM) – Circular

Categories

This circular route makes a great all-year-round walk  – enjoy lush greenery in spring and summer, or autumn’s spectacular colours.  And with wide gravel paths throughout, it is generally passable even in the depths of winter.

The gentle undulating path through Coppice of Linwood and Salisbury Trench inclosures crosses several of the streams which eventually meet to form King’s Garn Gutter. The walk can be extended to a figure-of-eight walk by combining it with our Janesmoor Pond walk.

Route

From Longcross car park, there is wide forestry track through the trees which joins up with the path within the inclosure. However this generally cuts up badly in wet weather, so should only be used in summer. Instead, turn left out of the car park and walk 400m along Furzley Lane until you reach another path taking you towards inclosure (at cycle maker post 20). Take care as you walk along the roadside.

Take the first left turn down a path taking you towards a gate leading into the inclosure after about 50m. After another 150m, the path forks. Take the path to the left.

The path bends around to the left before crossing a stream. It then climbs and sweeps round to the right.

Keep to the main path for another 400m until you cross the boundary into Salisbury Trench inclosure.

Ignore various paths and tracks off to either side and stick to the main gravel path cycle route as it gradually bends round to the right over a distance of about 1km. It eventually crosses a stream – Three Waters Gutter – before climbing with some open land to your left.  Shortly after crossing the stream,  you’ll come to a T-junction at cycle route marker 23.

To extend this walk, you can join our Janesmoor Pond route (3 miles, 5km) by turning left at cycle route marker 23.  Walk for 500m, passing through two inclosure gates and joining another path at cycle marker post 26. Take the path on the left to join the route.

Follow the circular route back to via the starting point of Janesmoor Pond, and beyond back in to King’s Garn Gutter Inclosure.  You’ll return to cycle post 26 where you turn left and retrace your steps back to re-join the route through Coppice of Linwood.

Otherwise, turn right and follow the path for another 1.2km until you reach the point where the path forks close to the gate where you originally entered the inclosure. Walk back up towards the gate and turn right on to Furzley Lane. Follow the road back to Longcross car park.
