New plans to make walking and cycling easier and more accessible in and around the New Forest have been unveiled by Hampshire County Council.
The New Forest Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), is intended to be a step forward for improving active travel options, supporting public health, and protecting the unique character of the national park.
Developed in collaboration with New Forest District Council, New Forest National Park Authority, and Forestry England, the plans outline improvements planned to walking and cycling routes.
The 22 routes are designed to connect residential areas and tourist accommodation with key attractions and destinations throughout the national park.
Key highlights of the New Forest plan include:
• A comprehensive network of primary and secondary cycling routes, connecting communities such as Ringwood, Brockenhurst, Lymington, and New Milton.
• Designated Core Walking Zones in key towns and villages including Fordingbridge, Lyndhurst, and Brockenhurst, where infrastructure improvements will be prioritised.
• Integration of leisure routes to reflect the New Forest’s role as a major visitor destination, supporting active travel for both residents and tourists.
Commenting on the plans, Nick Adams-King, leader of Hampshire County Council, said: “By making walking and cycling safer, more accessible, and more attractive, we’re helping to reduce car dependency, improve air quality, and support healthier lifestyles for residents and visitors alike.”
The plans are due to be phased in over the coming years, supported by a range of funding sources, including central government and developers.
