The NHS is set to offer rewards to encourage people to get walking and exercising more.
As reported by BBC News, early next year, NHS England will launch a “marathon a month” challenge, asking people to walk for around 30 minutes a day.
Those who do it every day will hit roughly 26 miles a month – the distance of a marathon.
Users will be able to log their walks online, or through their phone or smartwatch, for the scheme called Movement 26.2.
And the NHS says those who complete the challenge will then be eligible for rewards – which could include incentives and discounts such as shopping vouchers.
Backer of the scheme, Sir Brendan Foster, said the health benefits, and potential NHS savings, will also be significant.
“If someone walks 30 minutes five times a week, they could gain up to four extra years of healthy life,” he said.
Walking in the New Forest allows you not only to clock up your miles, but also enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of the national park.
To hit your 30 minutes a day, there are lots of quick strolls throughout the forest. Try the woodland walk from Swan Green to Emery Down and back. Or a short walk through the woods behind Ashurst could be completed in less than an hour.
If you want to take the first steps to longer walks, try our Sofa-to-10-mile challenge. The selection is a pathway from short strolls, building up to longer walks – all with the wonderful backdrop of New Forest scenery.
