There is a chance to see inside one of the New Forest’s most historic buildings this summer.

The Court of Verderers dates back to the 14th Century as the body originally authorised by the Crown to deal with those who offended against Forest Law.

The New Forest had been established by William the Conqueror as a royal hunting ground. Elected by local landowners, the court strictly enforced rules to preserve the sovereign’s exclusive hunting rights.

It remains an active court in administering the rights of the Commoners and plays an important role in the community and life of the New Forest.

The Verderers Hall at the top of Lyndhurst High Street is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday throughout August 2026, between 10:00 and 12:00 BST, and 13:00 to 14:00.
