Fritham is one of the New Forest’s most popular walking locations. This circular walk through mixed woodland cuts through two inclosures before you enjoy the sweeping views from the open expanse of Fritham Plain.

Route

Starting from the village car park, take the cycle path signposted to Frogham.

At the entrance to the car park, look out for the cylindrical black postbox. It was put here by the Shultze gunpowder factory which operated at nearby Eyeworth Pond from the 1860s to the early 20th Century.

 The path winds downhill through Gorley Bushes. At a fork after 900m, follow the path as it bends round to the left. After 400m you’ll get to a footbridge over Latchmore Brook. Cross and follow the path round to the left and continue on the cycle track.

Leave the cycle path when you come to a gate on the left in to Amberwood Inclosure (at cycle markerpost 10). After 550m you’ll join another path at Graze Hill. Continue on the main gravel path as it runs downhill and curves round to the right on to a straight stretch.

700m after the curve, take a left turn downhill towards a footbridge over Latchmore Brook, You’ll see a carved seat as a memorial to New Forest naturalist and filmmaker Eric Ashby.

Cross the footbridge and go through two gates in quick succession into Sloden Inclosure.

Follow the path as it gradually climbs through the inclosure. After 1.8km you’ll eventually reach a gate at the edge of the inclosure. Go through the gate and the path soon meets the main track across Fritham Plain – turn left and walk for 1.5km to head back to the car park.
