Park up and explore: New Forest walks by campervan
VW Campervan in the New Forest

Guest authors Nick and Michelle Harris of Camper Charter in Romsey on how a campervan can provide the freedom to travel between some of the New Forest’s best walking locations.

The New Forest is one of those rare places that rewards slow travel and exploration.

Ancient woodland, open heathland, picture-perfect villages and some of the finest walking in southern England – and it sits right on our doorstep.

We grew up riding from Acres Down through to Boldrewood and Andrew’s Mare, and those landscapes have stayed with us ever since.

A campervan is, we think, the ideal way to explore the forest for a walking break.

The network of roads in the national park is compact and varied, which means you can park up for a walk, move on to a village for lunch, and be at a completely different spot by afternoon without any of the logistics that come with fixed accommodation.

Our vans are a practical size for the forest’s narrower lanes and, with everything you need on board, you’re free to follow your own pace entirely.

Our personal favourite walk takes you through the ancient enclosures from Acres Down across to Boldrewood, where the Deer Sanctuary offers one of those quietly unforgettable moments – spotting deer among the trees on a still morning is genuinely special.

The Ornamental Drive is beautiful at any time of year, and Burley is always worth a stop.

We love grabbing a coffee or lunch in Brockenhurst or Lymington – both have real character, good food and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that makes the forest feel like a world apart.

Michelle and Nick Harris enjoy staying at campsites around the New Forest

Before you set off, there are a few important things to be aware of. Wild camping is not permitted anywhere in the New Forest, and overnight stays in car parks are not allowed.

The New Forest Code is clear that vehicles must not park on grass verges – always use a designated car park. This protects the forest’s fragile habitats and keeps the landscape as beautiful as it is.

On the roads, please keep your speed well below the posted limit at all times.

Animals roam freely throughout the forest and can appear on the road without warning, particularly at dawn and dusk.

Ponies, cattle and pigs deserve patience and space – slow down well before you reach them and wait for them to move in their own time.

Please also never feed the animals. However tempting it might be, feeding them encourages them towards roads and vehicles and can cause serious harm.

Campsites throughout the forest have facilities for campervans

For campsites, our website has a full guide, but our personal favourites are Minstead Manor Farm and Longmeadow Campsite – both well-suited to campervans and in lovely positions, convenient for walks at Acres Down and between Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst.
